Minerva Incentivises Supply of people and Data to solve social problems
access to THE RIGHT DATA AND THE RIGHT PEOPLE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD
To better solve issues facing society, we need to deepen our understanding of what causes the problems, how they can be improved and who most needs help.
Data can unlock this knowledge. The richer the data, the better. There's only so much a not-for-profit's own data can show so we need to look to data that other organisations collect to fill in the insights gap.
With more data comes more complexity. The capacity to develop powerful projects combining data sources is dependent on supply of interested skilled people.
Different skills and time commitments are needed throughout a project's development. Increasing the supply of the right people to projects they care deeply about will enable the most impactful data solutions to be developed.
There is a lot that can be done by volunteers helping not-for-profits better use their own data.
However, the most ambitious and potentially world-changing data solutions need access to the right data and people to be possible.
This is where we can help.
The movement to use data for social problems is growing but projects are constrained by access to the right data and people.
Minerva aims to unlock the supply to meet the demand with three key initiatives.
MINERVA PROGRAM FOR COMPANIES
The Minerva Program incentivises companies to give their employees the chance to spend time and use company data for powerful projects solving social problems.
MINERVA PROJECT MATCHING
A Minerva Project can be submitted to secure additional data and/or people. We help match these projects with our corporate partners on the Minerva Program.
secure DATA exchange
Minerva provides use of Data Republic's secure data exchange platform to manage the security and privacy challenges of sharing data.
Who's behind Minerva?
Minerva was originally developed by the team at Data Republic as an initiative to offer their secure data exchange platform on a pro-bono basis for Not-for-Profits. It quickly became clear that the opportunity to facilitate access to data that can uncover rich insights into the problems facing our society was bigger than a side-project of Data Republic.
In December 2016 The Minerva Collective was officially established as a not for profit, Co-founded by Whitney Komor, Mike Allwright and Anthony Tockar. It is led by Whitney and Mike and is currently operating in Australia and the US.
Data Republic is currently seed-funding the development of The Minerva Collective and contributing both funding and resource time from the whole team.
